Lately I've dedicated myself to rediscovering indie RPGs and I've found one gem after another, despite jumping into these titles blindly.
Cosmic Star Heroine is a very interesting game, I hadn't played its developers' previous games, partly because I can't stand popculture humor or anything that revolves around Cthulhu.
Cosmic Star Heroine has many strong points and in my opinion only one flaw, let's start from the good things: the graphics, the sprites, the animations and the pixel-art are impeccable, beautiful; the game's scenarios are alive and vibrant and never repetitive, from a graphic point of view it is a small masterpiece.
The music and sound effects are excellent and effective, the character design is interesting, all the characters have a distinctive style.
The gameplay is truly innovative and intelligent, the battle is a resource management, both the skills and the objects (even the basic attack) are for single use and must be recharged through a specific action, this makes the battles very tactical because each action must be used at the right time; especially the healing ones.
I really appreciated (which I don't understand why many criticize) that the enemies in the game don't respawn, this feature makes the game more realistic and the fights more controlled and not frustrating.
Moving on to the flaw of the game, everything goes too fast, both the story and the development of the characters, the whole plot seems like a marathon that goes from one action or decisive sequence to another.
At some points, Alyssa, the protagonist, makes critical decisions and the matter is resolved in a few seconds with simplicity and without depth.
In general, all the characters are fascinating right from their presentation but they don't go beyond this because the most that the story (or the secondary quests) give us are jokes.
From a narrative point of view there are at least two very critical moments which are resolved in a very banal way and in my opinion the story deserved better.
The ending is the only moment of the game where tension has its rightful space.
In any case, the game is a jewel from the point of view of art and gameplay and despite the flatness of the plot I still remained fond of the characters (Psybe is awesome) and I appreciate the work done on the lore of the game.
Just to say, I have already pre-ordered the developers' new game, but later I will draw the characters of Ara Fell, another indie jrpg which I found to be a masterpiece from the point of view of narration and characters building.
